AUGUST MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Work on the Town Square renovations will begin this month.  A new look and some new playground equipment is coming!!!!  Town & Country was approved by the Board for the project.
  • Discussion on Sunday Community Ball Game events and improvements on the ballfield.
  • Wi-fi is now available in the Town Hall.  Network name and password is posted.
  • The Sidewalk Grant is moving forward with the approval of the purchase by the Town of some small pieces of land or easements from their owners.

14.6 Gay Eskew Report: Boone Country Connection articles:

The “Reviving the Augusta Ballfield” article in the July 2023 publication received 1,100 hits in two days.  It struck the heartstrings of memories from former years of ballgames and involvement by those in the Augusta area.  A local guitarist and drummer volunteered to play the National Anthem on July 23rd; they continued playing various songs throughout the game.  There were 66 players and observers at the time a count was made.  The games are continuing on Sunday evenings under the lights from around 6:30 – 9 pm.  The first pitch is at 7 pm.

“Best of Augusta”  Photo Contest:

Adult/Teen Contest ending with September 30 deadline.  The focus is “Autumn in Augusta.”  The Harvest Festival activities on Saturday, September 16, will present numerous photo opportunities.

There will be a table on the Town Square advertising the Photo Contest.  Entry forms will be available.  Photographs of 4 x 6 pictures taken on your phone  can be printed on a portable photo printer for a nominal cash fee.  As a one-stop “Best of Augusta” Photo Contest display, photographers may enter their photos immediately into the contest with the filled out entry form and printed photograph.  Easy to remember to do!

6.1   Town Board suggest sending a Notice of 30  days to Hoffman Companies for unpermitted signs at the Hostel & Kickstand to remove the signs.

6.2   A Public Hearing was held on 6/27 for Conditional Use Permit Application at 5572 Chestnut. Zoning Commission recommends Denial of Application 2023-04 at 5572 Chestnut for various reasons.

6.3   Motion made by Rick Barton to Deny Conditional Use Permit Application2023-04 at 5572 Chestnut.

6.4   Seconded by Randal Oaks with 5 Trustees voting 4 aye and 1 nay vote. Ayes have it and approved.

6.5   Motion made by Rick Barton to approve sign Permit 2023-04 at 5549 Main St.

6.6   Seconded by Laura Miller and approved.

6.7   Motion made by Rick Barton to accpt Appointment of Dace Schrader to the Board of Adjustments for Term 2023 to 2028.

Town events are being posted on the Events page.  The Sunday evening ball games are gaining popularity.  An article is in the July Boone Country Connection about the revival of ball games on the Ballfield. Everything else is about the same.

 

“Best of Augusta” Photo Contest report

The photo contest schedule for the fall is September–Adult/Teen contest with a focus on the Augusta Harvest Festival.  There will be a booth in the Town Square for entering the contest.  Entry forms will be available and printing of the photos will also be available for a nominal convenience fee.  All can be turned in for the September 30 deadline.

October will be the Kids’ “Best of Augusta” Photo Contest in conjunction with Augusta Elementary School.  This will give a little more time for entries to be assembled and turned in.

5.4   Town of Augusta received a check for $500 from Ashley Hesjedal to go toward the Town Square improvements and a Memorial for Robert “Bob” Hofer.

5.5   History Museum retaining wall completed.

5.6   Motion made by Rick Barton to allocate $2000 for erosion repair at Public & Fifth and Lower & Main St.

6.1   Zoning Commission received a CK 8691 for a Conditional Use Permit at 5568 Main St to operate a Bed and Breakfast from Tom Conboy. Public Hearing was held and the recommendation from the Zoning Commission was to approve the application 2023-03.

6.2   Motion made by Rick Barton to approve Conditional Use Permit 2023-03 at 5568 Main St to operate a Bed and Breakfast in the Town of Augusta.

6.3   Seconded by Randal Oaks and approved.

6.4   Hostel and Kickstand situation still in process.

        7.1   September Harvest Festival preparations are underway as well as preparations for the Christmas Walk.

7.2   Chamber is meeting with New Melle and Defiance Chamber Association discussing helping with Tourism.

14.7 Gay Eskew report: “Best of Augusta” Photo Contest —  Winners from the Spring 2023 Contest are:  FIRST PLACE is Lisa Tucker of Augusta with her photo titled “Come Sit Among the Tulips” and RUNNER UP is Scott Knoche of Defiance with a photo titled “Off Season in the Bottoms.”  Lisa’s prize was donated by Quaint, Cozy & Quiet Airbnb for a $25 Gift Certificate to a participating Augusta business.  Scott’s prize was a $25 Gift Certificate to Halcyon Spa.  Thank you to all who submitted photos. Congratulations Lisa and Scott.

 

14.8 Town Square Illustration Concept for playground equipment, gazebo and walkway design presented by Randal Oaks and Don Simon of Hoffman Company reviewed and discussed. Phase 1 of this project in process.
